Thumbnail Art

This is my first time taking an art class since middle school. That being said, the Thumbnail assignment was an interesting and challenging first exercise to understand the various depths and textures of numerous objects that can be brought out through art using different mediums or equipment. My favorite three pieces are the bottom left, top middle, and bottom right. For the one on the bottom left, the materials I used for this piece were the sharpie and the red and white color sticks. I enjoyed the technique I used to bring out the light because the dark background provided a nice contrast to represent the light coming from the lamp at a distance; however, on the newsprint I drew the whole lamp, but the light emitting from the bulb was missing. My shift of focus was different on the final piece. The  top middle piece might be my favorite. It’s simple but you understand what the drawing represents. I’m proud I created slight depth to show the under parts of the frame. However, I wish I had tried to draw the texture of the rope instead of using a black sharpie. The bottom right drawing was created using the charcoal stick, graphite pencil, and charcoal pencil. The graphite pencil was used as an outline, the charcoal stick was used to create more control to create a fabric-esq appearance, while the charcoal stick was used widely to attack the larger spaces. The lines to create the fabric texture could use more work, but they were better on my practice attempts. Some improvements to be made overall is the practice of being afraid to maximize space and draw various objects surrounding each other. I focused on one object at a time, or the ones I were confident I could do better than others. I didn’t challenge myself enough in regards to understanding structure. Overall, the assignment gave me some practice with texture and shading that I had not received in previous art classes.
